Samuel Taylor Coleridgeの詩"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner "に、アルバトロスを射殺した主人公がそれを首に巻いて運ぶ破目になった描写が語源。

Instead of the cross, the Albatross

転用して、「不幸なことに重い負担を強いられている」の意味で現在使われていることわざ。
